Lake City, Fla. – The Itawamba Community College volleyball program saw its successful season come to close Friday morning with a 3-1 loss to Gulf Coast State.
The Indians battled with the Commodores in the NJCAA Gulf District Tournament elimination game, as they split the first two sets. Gulf Coast State took the first set 25-16, but the Indians won the second, 25-22.
In the third set, the Indians dropped a hard fought 25-20 battle, and fell 25-12 in the fourth set.
The Indians had a strong defensive showing with five players recording double digits in DIGS led by Londyn Bakeris (Olive Branch) and Sarah Allyn Thornell (Atoka, Tenn.) with 19 each. Lydia Hitchcock (Boaz, Ala.) and Angie Gonzalez (Southaven) added 16 digs each and Kate Nakagawa (Corinth) had 10.
Mary Leslie Cranford (Covington, Tenn.) and Nakagawa led the team with eight kills each and Thornell had a team-high 23 assists.
The Indians finished the 2021 season with a with a 19-12 record and represented Region 23 in the Gulf District Tournament, which was they have done in both seasons of program history.
