Fulton, Miss. – The Itawamba Community College women's basketball team held off a late rally from Northwest Mississippi Community College Monday night to pick up a 70-64 win and advance to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
The Lady Indians (15-9) led for most of the contest, but a late charge by the Lady Rangers gave them a one point, 64-63, lead with just over a minute to play.
Trailing for the first time since early in the first quarter, the Lady Indians picked up a huge three-pointer from Demetria Shephard (Pontotoc) with one minute left to play to regain the lead, 66-64.
The Lady Indians would hold off the Lady Rangers and would make free throws to clinch the victory.
Shephard led the Lady Indians with 26 points.
The Lady Indians have a quick turnaround for the next round of the Region 23 Tournament as they will travel to Poplarville Tuesday for a quarterfinals matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be available on prccmedia.com/gold. Tickets can be purchased at prccathletics.com/tickets.
