Butler earns NJCAA DII Baseball Player of the Week

FULTON, Miss. – Madden Butler has been selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII Baseball Player of the Week, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

Butler described earning the NJCAA Player of the Week honor as "an awesome feeling. A lot of hard work put in during the fall and a lot of time in the cages, just getting swings in; it's just a wonderful feeling."

"A lot of hard work put in during the fall and a lot of time in the cages, just getting swings in; it's just a wonderful feeling," Butler said.

The freshman first baseman from Corinth quickly made an impact at the beginning of his collegiate career to help the Indians to a 3-1 start to the season. He recorded a .545 batting average with a double, a triple, two home runs, and two walks, leading to six RBI and seven runs scored as well as a 1.364 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage for the week.

Butler also shared how it feels for his team to start with the 3-1 record and how it sets the tone for the rest of the season.

"3-1 is an awesome way to start," he said. "I feel like we should have started 4-0, but we have a great team, and I'm really looking forward for the rest of this season. We have a lot of freshmen this year and a lot of older guys, and they know how to set the tone. We have a lot of hope in our season, and we feel like we can win a lot of big games."

The Indians will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 7, for a doubleheader with Olney Central (Ill.) at Roy Cresap Field, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
