Reed drafted by the Texas Rangers

FULTON, MS – "Unreal!" was the one-word text sophomore Tyreque Reed used to describe the moment when he heard his name called during the 2017 MLB Draft. He was selected as the 254th overall pick in the 8th round by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.

Reed was a unanimous selection for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State First Team and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 selection after leading the country with a .504 batting average and only striking out 11 times in 141 at-bats.
The 6-foot-2, 260-pound first baseman and right fielder had 71 hits with 15 home runs, 15 doubles, and 1 triple. Reed had 57 RBIs to go along with 53 runs, six stolen bases and 46 walks. He was named MACJC Player of the Week twice this past season.
The Houlka native finished his sophomore season ranked in the Top 10 in five offensive categories in country, including: a nation's best on-base percentage (.638), slugging percentage (.943), batting average, walks and home runs.
According to a tweet from Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant), Rangers writer from the Dallas Morning News, Ranger Scouting Director Kipp Fagg described Reed as having "Big, big power. Kind of a right-handed Prince Fielder."
Reed had a .416 career batting average with a .535 on-base and .814 slugging percentage in two seasons with the Indians. [Career Stats]
He is the second highest pick and the 19th student-athlete to be drafted in the storied history of the ICC baseball program.

Reed signed with Mississippi State in late May. He also drew offers from Auburn, Kentucky, and Samford.
