SCOOBA, MS – After being the right side of five straight one run wins, the Itawamba Community College baseball team dropped game two of the doubleheader with East Mississippi Community College 4-3 on a walk off single Tuesday night.
The Indians (22-16, 10-12 MACJC) had won six in a row after their game one victory and the first five of the streak were all one run wins.
Trailing 3-0 headed into the final frame, the Indians rallied to tie the game on two wild pitches and a run scoring double by Ty Wheeler (Tupelo). The Indians, who rallied to beat Mississippi Delta Community College in the final inning last week, had the momentum in their favor, but the Lions had the final at bat.
After a quick first out, the Lions (12-24, 8-12 MACJC) picked up back-to-back singles to put the winning run in scoring position and Whitt Davis added the third consecutive hit with his walk off single through the six hole.
The exciting finish capped off a pitcher's duel where Stephon Moore (West Point) and Kaleb Barnes (Pontotoc) combined for a seven hitter and Moore striking out six. The Lions' Jacques Pucheu and Ryder Davis held the Indians to only four hits in the nightcap.
Even with the split with the Lions, the Indians are still pushing for a playoff spot as they are tied with Holmes Community College for the final playoff spot in eighth place. The Indians and Bulldogs will go head-to-head next week, but first the Indians will host No. 15 East Central Community College on Saturday.
First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2:00 pm at Roy Cresap Field.
