No. 22 Lady Indians defeat No. 24 Co-Lin in opening round of regionals

No. 22 Lady Indians defeat No. 24 Co-Lin in opening round of regionals

Ellisville, Miss. - No. 22 Itawamba Community College women's tennis picked ups thrilling 5-4 win over No. 24 Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the opening round of the  NJCAA Region 23 Championships Friday. 

Five of the matches had tie breakers with four singles matches going three sets. 

The Lady Indians took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning the No.1 and No. 2 match ups. 

In singles play, the Lady Wolves won No. 1, No. 3 and No .4 singles while the Lady Indians took No. 2 and No. 6 matches to tie it at 4-4.

Tyler Athas secured the win for the Lady Indians winning No. 5 singles by rallying to win the second set, 6-3 and the tie breaker set 10-8 after dropping the first 7-6 (7-4). 

The Lady Indians will face No. 1 seed and No. 11 ranked Jones College Saturday morning at 8:30 p.m. with a a trip to the finals on the line.

No. 2 - Jimena Palomo (ICC) def. Keegan Thurman - 6-0, 6-0
No. 3 - Ally Everett (CL) def. Cheyenne Hughes - 6-4, 6-1
No. 4 - Anna Rutledge (CL) def. Kaitlyn Greenwood - 4-6, 6-3, 10-6
No. 5  - Tyler Athas (ICC) def. Makaela Rummells - 6-7(4-7), 6-3, 10-8
No. 6  - Maggie Franks (ICC) def. Makayla Martin - 1-6, 7-6(7-5), 10-4

Doubles:
No. 1 - Coghetto/Palomo (ICC) def. Thurman/Rodriguez - 8-1
No. 2 - Hughes/Athas (ICC) def. Everett/Rutledge - 8-6
