Fulton, Miss. – Whitney Watkins (Decatur, Ala.) drained a three-pointer with 6.9 seconds remaining to propel the Lady Indians to a 61-59 win over Lawson State Monday night.
The Lady Indians (5-1) jumped out to a big lead early and led 23-7 at the end of the opening frame, but were help to only four points in the second while the Lady Cougars scored 20 to tie the contest at 27-27 at the break.
After leading 47-43 at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Indians were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the final quarter, but rallied to take a one point lead, 53-52, with 2:24 remaining.
Trailing by four with under 20 second left in the game, Tabreea Gandy (Starkville) drew a foul and nailed both free throws. The Lady Indians quickly regained possession that led to Watkins' big three-pointer to take a 60-59 lead. Gandy added a free throw late to secure the victory for the Lady Indians.
Watkins led the Lady Indians with a career-high 22-points followed by Gandy with 10.
The Lady Indians will travel to Gadsden, Ala. Thursday night for a non-division game with Gadsden State Community College. Tip-off is schedule for 5:30 p.m.
