ICC baseball has six earn All-MACCC honors

Fulton, Miss. – Six Itawamba Community College baseball players earned All-MACCC honors as the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) announced its baseball postseason awards Tuesday.

Will Verdung of Corinth earned All-MACCC First Team honors while Matthew Martinolich of Ellisville, JW Armistead of Mooreville were named All-MACCC Second Team, and Jackson Lee of Calhoun City, Gray Bane of Olive Branch and Jaxin Settlemires of Kossuth earned Honorable Mention honors.

Verdung, who was also named MACCC Baseball Player of the Year, led the Indians in seven offensive categories with a .389 batting average, .484 on base percentage, .706 slugging percentage, 65 RBI, 32 walks, 15 home runs and tied for the team-high 70 hits in 49 games this season. The University of Southern Mississippi signee had .917 fielding percentage recording 42 putouts, 57 assists and four double plays at third base. He also had nine appearances on the mound and finished with a 4-1 record and two saves in 14 and two thirds' innings of relief.

Martinolich, a Delta State University signee, hit .374 with a .461 on base percentage and finished tied with Verdung for a team-high 70 hits. He scored a team-high 59 runs and had 13 doubles, four home runs and 34 RBI. The shortstop had a .925 fielding percentage and recorded 70 put outs, a team-high 90 assists and helped turn 20 double plays.

Armistead led the Indians with 77 strikeouts during his freshman season and went 6-3 with a 3.88 earned run average. He allowed only 47 hits in 60 and two thirds' innings of work in 12 appearances.

Lee hit .374 with 64 hits, 43 runs scored, 32 RBI, five doubles, two triples and two home runs during his freshman season and stole a team-high 15 bases.

Bane, a Southern Mississippi signee, finished with a .344 batting average with 56 hits, 40 runs scored, 37 RBI, 10 doubles and five home runs. He recorded a team-high 324 putouts as the starting catcher.

Settlemires had a strong freshman season finished with the team' second highest amount of RBI with 49 and home runs with 10 while hitting .360. He had 54 hits with 12 doubles and scored 34 runs.

The Indians finished the season with a 36-13 overall record, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament berth and were ranked No. 13 in the final NJCAA Rankings.
