Indians split on the road with Southwest

Indians split on the road with Southwest

Summit, Miss. – The Indians split a conference doubleheader with Southwest Saturday falling 9-6 in game one and winning game two 10-2.

Game 1: Bears 9, Indians 6

The Indians and Bears battled to start the day in a game with five leads changes, but it was the hosting Bears that took the final lead scoring three runs over the final two innings to pick up the 9-6 win.

After Southwest took an early 1-0 lead, Drew Capobianco (Saltillo)  doubled to score the tying run in the top of the third , but a three-run home run would give the Bears a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth.

Blaine Ware (Batesville) and Eli Hancock (Houston) drove in runs in the fourth, and Connar Gardner (Southaven) tied the game at four in the fifth with a RBI single.

In the top of the sixth, Hancock would give the Indians the lead with a RBI single and Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) would extend the lad to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly.

The Bears answered in the bottom of the frame scoring two runs to tie the game once again. They would then take the lead on a solo home run in the seventh and add two runs in the eighth to pick up the win.

Game 2: Indians 10, Bears 2

In the nightcap, the Indians trailed 1-0 until the fifth when they scored six runs that propelled them to a 10-2 win and the split.

Bryce Capobianco (Saltillo) tied the game with single and Gardner followed with a single to give the Indians a 2-1 lead.

Hancock drove in a run by reaching on an error and Drew Capobianco single to score two runs and stretch the lead to 5-1.

A single by Martinolich capped off the six run frame and gave the Indians a five run lead.

Martinolich would pick up another RBI in the seventh, followed by a run scoring double by Will Verdung (Corinth). Bryce Capobianco then doubled to score two runs and give the Indians a 10-1 advantage.

Southwest scored one run in the bottom half of the inning but the lead was too big to overcome giving the Indians the 10-2 win.

Collin Babin (Ponchatoula, La.) went the distance on the mound and improves to 2-0 this season.

The Indians will host conference rival Northeast Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. in Fulton.
