Big first inning gives Indians a split with Calhoun

DECATUR, AL – After dropping game one of the doubleheader, the Itawamba Community College baseball team exploded for six first inning runs on their way to an 11-4 game two victory and series split with Calhoun Community College Friday.
The Indians (1-1) explosive first inning was highlighted by a play that Coach Rick Collier had never seen before as Hunter Nabors (Montevallo, AL) hit a bases loaded pop up that resulted in four runs. Nabors pop up landed just behind the pitcher's mound on the third base side for a hit after a miscommunication between the Warhawks' infielders.
The shortstop scooped up the ball and made a high throw to second base that rolled to the fence allowing Nabors and the other three Indian base runners to score.
"In my entire career, I've never seen anything like that," said Collier.
The base hit with a three base throwing error put the Indians up 6-0 after the top of the first, but a run scoring double by Cody Pate (Amory) and a single by Tyreque Reed (Houlka) started the scoring for the Indians.
Reed hit his second RBI single of the game in the third to extend the Indians lead to 7-0 before the Warhawks plated two run in the fourth, but a run scoring single by Pate put the Indians up 8-2 after six complete.
The Indians final three runs came with one swing of the bat as Austin Carpenter (Belmont) hit a no doubter over the center field fence for his first home run of the season.
Calhoun plated two runs in the final frame but the Indians lead was too much for them to overcome.
JT Salter (Bay Minette, AL) started the game and walked way with his first win of the season after taking the hill with a six run advantage. The sophomore threw four innings while allowing four hits, two runs (two earned) and striking out three.
The Indians will travel to Millington, TN on Valentine's Day for a doubleheader with Southwest Tennessee Community College. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
