Baseball rolls over Coahoma in Game 1, 12-2
FULTON, MS - The Indians (16-13, 3-8 MACJC) scored six runs in the first and second innings combined to pick up a 12-2 Game 1 victory over the Tigers (10-22, 5-8 MACJC) in eight innings on Tuesday.
ICC scored three runs in the first inning behind a two-out rally sparked by a two-run double off the fence in left-center by Drake Rowton (Marion, AR). Rowton finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
The Indians followed with another three-run inning in the bottom of the second, which included a monster home run from Tyreque Reed (Houlka) to start the inning and a clutch two-out double by Ty Wheeler (Tupelo) to push across a pair of runs.
Coahoma answered with a runs in the top of the fourth and fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-2, but the Indians answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth behind a second blistering home run from Reed to start the inning and a two-run single by Rowton with two outs in the inning.
ICC invoked the mercy rule with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Timothy Rowe (Hernando) doubled and scored on an error before Wheeler singled and scored the game-securing run on a single to right by Austin Carpenter (Belmont).
Reed went 2-for-3 with a walk, two home runs, two runs and two RBI. Wheeler went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI. As a team, the Indians totaled 15 hits in the victory.
Blake Bennett (Memphis) improved to 3-3 on the season after giving up two runs, both earned, while scattering six hits, striking out three and walking three in eight innings of work.
