Indians swept in home opener against Calhoun

Indians swept in home opener against Calhoun

FULTON, Miss. – For the first time since 2006, the Indians were swept in their first home doubleheader of the season after dropping a pair of games to Calhoun on Wednesday.

Game 1: Calhoun 8, Indians 6

Down 8-5, Jarrett Morris reached on a dropped third strike to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hayden Roberts kept the inning alive by drawing a walk to score Ben Davis but a strikeout searched the Warhawks two-run victory.

The Indians took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the first after a two-run home run by Jaxin Settlemires. Calhoun doubled in a run to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the second.

Tyler Yearwood smashed a home run to left to give the Indians a 3-2 lead. The Warhawks answered again with a triple to tie the game, 3-3, in the top of the third. The Indians answered to retake the lead on a Jarrett Morris single to score Bo Rock in the home half of the inning.

The Indians went up 5-3 when Yearwood scored after Settlemires reached on an error in the fourth.

Calhoun answered with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 7-5 advantage before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh.

Jackson Lee had a pair of hits with one going for a double.

Tyler Morrison (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Indians after giving up one run on no hits and a walk in less than an inning of work.

Game 2: Calhoun 12, Indians 2 (5 innings)

The Indians picked up a two-run double on a line drive to center to plate Davis and Lee to make it a 2-2 contest after one complete.

The rest of the day belonged to the Warhawks.

Calhoun hit a grand slam to spark an eight-run second inning. They added a solo home run in the fourth and added the run-rule invoking run on a ground out in the fifth.

The Indians could only manage four hits in the loss, two of those being doubles off the bats of Lee and Rock.

Matt Bourdon (0-2) was the pitcher of record after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one in one inning of work.

The last time the Indians were swept in their home opener, Southwest Tennessee picked up a 4-3 win in game one and a 10-7 extra-inning win in game 2 on February 13, 2006.
