FULTON, MS – The Itawamba Community College baseball team rallied for six runs in the seventh to cut Meridian Community College's lead to one, but came up just short falling 10-8 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Indians (13-10, 1-6 MACJC) trailed 9-2 entering the bottom of the seventh in the nine inning game but sent 11 to the plate to make the Eagles big lead disappear.
Delvin Zinn (Pontotoc) started the rally with a lead off single and Timothy Rowe (Hernando) followed suit to put runners at the corners. With one out, Austin Carpenter (Belmont) stepped up and hit a single to score Zinn and Rowe later came around on passed ball.
Sophomore Hagan Box (French Camp) drove in a pair of runs two batters later with a base hit, forcing the Eagles (21-2, 6-1 MACJC) to make a pitching change.
The new pitcher didn't slow down the rally as the Indians loaded the bases with two outs and Zinn picked up his second hit of the inning that drove in Cody Pate (Amory) and Russ Payne (Fulton).
When the third out was recorded the Indians had cut the Eagles lead down to one, 9-8. However, the Eagles would pick up an insurance run in the top of the eight and held the Indians to only one hit in the final two frames to pick up the 10-8 win.
Despite the Eagles scoring 10 runs, the Indian pitching staff allowed only five earned runs, as the defense committed four errors, giving sophomore Nick Burns (Mantachie) was hit with the tough loss to fall to 3-1 this season.
