FULTON, MS – Itawamba Community College baseball opened the 2016 with a big second inning to defeat Motlow State Community College (TN) 19-9 in game one of the season opening doubleheader.
The Indians (1-0) fell behind early and trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the second. The would then send 13 to the plate resulting in nine runs highlighted by a two run scoring single by Delvin Zinn (Pontotoc) and a single by Timothy Rowe (Hernando) that plated Zinn.
The base knock by Rowe, who went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI, gave the Indians their first lead of the contest, 5-4. Zinn finished the game 2-3 with three RBI and two walks.
Once the Indians had the lead, they extended it quickly as Tyreque Reed (Houlka), Hagen Box (French Camp) and Kaleb Barnes (Pontotoc) drove in one run each. Freshman center fielder Russ Payne (Fulton), who went 2-3 with four RBI, capped off the nine run inning with a two run scoring double to left.
The six run lead was enough for sophomore pitcher Nick Burns (Mantachie), who picked up the win, but the Indians added another seven in the third. Back-to-back doubles by Ty Wheeler (Tupelo) and Rowe got the scoring started and set the tone for the second consecutive big inning.
Motlow State plated two runs in both the fourth and fifth frames, to keep from being run-ruled, but the Indians were able to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. After Wheeler scored on a fielder's choice, Reed crossed the plate after the ball got away from the first baseman in a pick off attempt to give the Indians the 19-9 win in six innings.
