FULTON, MS – Former Itawamba Community College baseball standout and current Delta State University third baseman Ethan Gill of Pontotoc was named to the 2015 C Spire Ferriss Trophy watch list on Wednesday.
Named after legendary baseball coach and player Dave "Boo" Ferriss, the trophy is awarded to the most outstanding collegiate baseball player in the state as voted on by college coaches, professional scouts and a fan vote conducted by C Spire.
Gill is one of 12 players to be named as a candidate for the state's highest baseball honor. The junior third baseman hit .339 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles and 49 RBI to help the Statesmen reach the Gulf South Conference championship game.
During his time at ICC, Gill led Coach Rick Collier's squad in hitting in both his freshman and sophomore campaigns. As a sophomore, he hit .388 with five home runs, 11 doubles and 34 RBI to earn MACJC First-Team All-State honors and hit .328 with five home runs, nine doubles, two triples and 30 RBI as a freshman, earning Second-Team All-State.
If named as a finalist, Gill will be the fourth member of the Delta State baseball program to reach the finals and could be the first to receive the award.
This year's Ferriss Trophy winner will be announced Monday, May 18, at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson during a luncheon.
