Indians battle through tough Day 1 of NJCAA National Tennis Tournament

PLANO, Texas – After a slight weather delay and match relocations, the ICC men's tennis team battled through tough draws in the opening round of the 2024 NJCAA DI National Tennis Championship hosted by Collin College in Plano, Texas on Monday.

The Indians finished the day in a three-way tie for 18th with four points. Iowa Central Community College and Pratt Community College leads the way with 18 points each.

Tasso Moreira picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shingai Manyonga (Illinois Valley) in No. 1 singles. Moreira later teamed up with Joan Mateu Ramis Pascual to defeat Davis Rowton and Emmanuel Wettey (Lewis & Clark) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

In No. 2 singles, Pascual fell 6-2, 6-3 to seventh-seeded Simeon Latinchev (Pratt). Jack Semper dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to sixth-seeded Gabriel Cuenca (Pratt), in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Cade Teeple was defeated 6-0, 6-3 by Derrick Namanya (Iowa Central).

Knox Waterer and Ben Orr played their matches at nearby Highland Park Tennis Courts. In No. 5 singles, Waterer dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 decision to Matthew Rogers (Abraham Baldwin Agricultural) Orr fell 6-1, 6-1 to Nicolas Checa Torres (USC Sumter) in No. 6 singles play.

Semper and Waterer dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Guy Dagan and Seth Seely (Collin) in No. 2 doubles. Orr and Teeple fell to Tadeo Missan and Mariano Orsini Rodriguez (Iowa Central) 6-1, 6-1 to close out the opening day of tournament play.

Winners from Monday will advance to the Round of 16 in the Championship bracket while losers will fall into the Consolation bracket.
