No. 25 Indians win thriller over No. 22 East Central

No. 25 Indians win thriller over No. 22 East Central

FULTON, MS – A battle of ranked opponents was true to form as the No. 25 Itawamba Community College men's tennis team and No. 2 East Central Community College came down to the wire Friday with the Indians winning a thriller, 5-4.

The Indians (1-1) jumped out to a two game lead as David Garcia Perez (Madrid, Spain) and Brendan Jobe (Corinth) won No. 1 doubles 8-5 and Michael Crotts (New Albany) and Roberto Valadez (New Albany) won No. 3's 8-5.

Perez extended the Indians lead with his 6-3, 6-4 No. 1 singles win, but the Warriors tied things up at 3-3 after winning the No.2 and No. 3 singles matches.

Chris Shands (New Albany) grabbed the No. 4 single wins by the score of 6-3, 6-4 but the Warriors took No. 5 singles in a super set 2-6, 6-4 (11-9).

The exciting day came to an even more exciting conclusion as Russell Applewhite (Amory) rallied to defeat Graham Murphree 3-6, 6-4 (12-10) to give the Indians their first win of the season.

The Indians will host No. 17 Copiah-Lincoln Community College Saturday at 11 am.
