FULTON, MS – The No. 7 ICC softball team ended its season with a 7-6 loss to No. 10 East Central Community College in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) State Tournament Tuesday at Jones County Junior College.
When the game originally started on Saturday, East Central (43-9) took advantage of a pair of errors to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Addie Thompson (Hamilton) answered with a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to give the Indians (39-10) a 4-1 lead.
The Warriors cashed in on two more ICC errors in the second and another in the third when Summer Lavender roped a two-run home run to put East Central on top 5-4 before the game was delayed due to lightning in the area with outs in the inning.
An hour after the delay, tournament officials and coaches suspended the tournament until Tuesday afternoon.
71 hours and 48 minutes later, the Warriors picked up a pair of insurance runs in the top of fourth to take a 7-4 advantage.
ICC answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Thornton (Carrollton) singled and scored on double by Bree Thompson (Water Valley). Thornton scored again in the sixth on a single by Lane Kennedy (Smithville) before a perfect throw to home plate by Lavender cut down the game-tying run.
Mamie Hollenhead (Mathiston) barreled up on a one-out double that bounced off the top of the fence in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Blevins (Columbus) entered to run and advanced into scoring position when Bre Harford (Southaven) legged out a play in the infield that was originally scored as a hit but was later changed to an error.
Sheneria Tyes (Baldwyn) replace Harford on the bases and coaxed the Warriors into a rundown allowing Blevins to sprint home from third, but East Central was able to apply the tag on Tyes just before Blevins touched home plate to escape with the 7-6 victory.
ICC fell into the loser's bracket after dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to open tournament play. The Bulldogs (45-4) got a three-run homer from MACJC Player of the Week Izzy Werdann in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the victory.
The Indians' 39 wins are the most in a single season while their seven of their 10 loses were to teams ranked in the Top 10.
