MERIDIAN, MS – Mother Nature has altered the schedule dramatically this season and the Itawamba Community College softball program hit the field for the first time in a week Saturday to compete in the Rush Invitational.
The Lady Indians (7-3) got off to a slow start offensively, but exploded for eight runs in the final three innings to pick up an 8-1 win over Meridian Community College.
When the rust from a week of wet weather was knocked off the Lady Indians bats they made the most of it. Courtney Roberts (Hatley) and Maddy Lukens (Saltillo) led the charge for the Lady Indians as they both went 2-for-3 and Roberts driving in two runs.
Autumn Bonner (Fayette, AL) found some fire in her bat as she crushed a two-run homer in the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Johnson (Branson, MO) threw five innings, allowed only five hits and left the game with the Lady Indians leading 3-1. Katlin McDuffy (Iuka) and Cara Hopper (Caledonia) were able to close out the game in the circle to preserve the win for the Lady Indians and Johnson. Johnson improves to 4-1 this season.
In the nightcap of the Rush Tournament, the Lady Indians will take on Shelton State Community College (AL).
