Lady Indians clinch North Division championship with Coahoma sweep

The Itawamba Community College softball team secured its second Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division championship in the past three years after sweeping Coahoma Community College 11-3 and 7-4 in their Breast Cancer Awareness series on Saturday.

The Lady Indians (29-10, 18-2 MACJC North) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after the first inning and used solid pitching from freshman Kami Roberts (Smithville), who improved to 3-0, in the 11-3 Game 1 victory. Sophomore Jasna Clay (Itawamba AHS) went 3-for-3 in the first of two games with a trio of singles and three runs scored. Freshman Lauren Lewis (Mooreville) went 2-for-2 with a walk, double, steal, a RBI and run scored while Roberts helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with a walk, steal and RBI. Freshmen Anna Holley (New Hope) and Jessi Patterson (Nettleton) each added a single while fellow freshman Ashley Camp (Amory) had a three-run triple in the win.

Freshman pitcher Dani Taylor (West Union) improved to 4-1 as she struck out a season-high eight batters in the Lady Indians' 7-4 win in the second game of the afternoon. The Lady Indians managed only three hits in the game while drawing 14 free passes in the game. Lewis pushed across four runs on a pair of sacrifice flys and a two-run single.

Players wore pink uniforms while breast cancers survivors Natchez's Dee Newman, grandmother to Ashley Camp, and Ann Roberts of Smithville, mother of Kami Roberts, both threw out honorary first pitches before Saturday's games.

The Lady Indians will host the MACJC State Tournament April 26-28 and earned an automatic bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament May 3-5 in Clinton.
