FULTON, MS – The Itawamba Community College baseball team wrapped up the regular season Sunday with a series sweep over visiting Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
The Indians (19-17, 13-15 MACJC) picked up a 9-1 win in game one behind a big first inning, and completed the sweep with a 7-1 game two victory sparked by a second inning rally.
It didn't take the Indians long to get on the board in game one, as they exploded for nine runs in the opening frame. Freshman Timothy Rowe (Hernando) led the first inning charge picking up two hits driving in two runs including the game's first run on a double off the center field fence and Seth Young (Olive Branch) added two runs with a hard hit line drive to right field.
The big lead was more than enough run support for sophomore starting pitcher TJ Watson (Dallas, GA) to pick up his sixth win. Watson kept the Co-Lin batters guessing over his six and two thirds innings of work as he allowed only six hits and struck out six.
In the nightcap, the second inning proved to the difference as the Indians scored four runs off four hits and one error. Ty Wheeler (Tupelo), Gable Butler (Iuka) and Young loaded the bases with three consecutive hits and Dalton Hudspeth (Louisville) reached on an error during a sacrifice bunt attempt that allowed Young and Wheeler to score. Sophomore Tanner Poole (Amory) capped off the rally with his second double of the game.
The Indians added three insurance runs in the next inning highlighted by a run scoring single by Hudspeth.
Trenton Stringer (Stringer) gave the bullpen a rest in game two as he went the distance allowing no earned runs on five hits while striking out three to improve to 4-3 on the year.
The sweep keeps the Indians playoff hopes alive as they currently sit one game ahead of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College who has one series remaining.
