JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 7 Indians split their first road doubleheader of the season with Jackson State on Sunday.
Game 1: No. 7 Indians 7, Jackson State 3
McKenzie Patters (Corinth) went three-for-three with three runs scored, a double and a triple to lead the Indians at the plate.
ICC jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Green Jays rallied to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the second. The Indians put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth but Jackson State answered with a two-run home run in the home half of the inning. The Indians put the game on ice with a three-run top of the seventh.
Briana Posey (Florence, Ala.) and Hope Harbin (Columbus) each added a pair of hits while Mattie Meine (Olive Branch), Montana Downs (Olive Branch) and Summer Cryder (Tupelo) rounded out the Indians 10-hit performance.
Kaylee Nelson (Moulton, Ala.) picked up her second win after giving up three runs, two earned, on three hit and two walks while striking out three. Mary Kate Butler (Pontotoc) got her first save on the year after throwing two inning of scoreless action while walking one and striking out another.
Game 2: Jackson State 8, No. 7 Indians 7
The Indians scored five runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 6-2 deficit, but the Green Jays rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to earn the split with an 8-7 win in the nightcap.
Meine and Cryder each had a pair of hits as the Indians scattered eight hits on the evening.
The Green Jays scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. The Indians rallied with five runs of their own in the top of the seventh to retake a one-run advantage, but Jackson State's bats stayed red hot to rally with a pair of runs to pick up the win.
Maggie Smithey (New Albany), Ivy Watts (Tupelo), Chloe Morgan (Batesville), and Posey each had a hit in the game.
Butler was the pitcher of record after coming in for relief of Madison Burrus (Hernando). Burrus gave up six earned runs on eight hits and three walks to go along with four strikeouts. Butler game up one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out one.
