Columbus, Miss. – The Itawamba Community College volleyball team opened the MUW Owl Invitational Saturday with a 3-0 win in a battle with Rust College.
In the opening set, the Indians trailed for most of the set, but rallied to tie it at 22-22. Rust would then take a 24-23 lead but were unable to close out the set as they Indians fought back once again and won the wild first set, 28-26.
The Indians jumped out to a good size lead in the second set, but Rust battled back and cut tied the set at 24-24. However, the Indians were able to win the next two points to pick up the 26-24 lead and take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the team battled early, but the Indians were able to stretch the lead out and pick up a 25-27 win to complete the sweep.
Sarah Allyn Thornell (Atoka, Tenn.) led the Indians with 10 kills and 10 assists and Olivia Hines (Olive Branch) had a team-high 14 digs.
