Fulton, Miss. – In the first ever playoff volleyball match held in the Davis Event Center, the hosting Indians gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about with a 3-0 playoff win over Northwest Wednesday night.
The Indians (18-10) battled in the first set with the Rangers before picking up a 25-20 win. In the second set, the Indians took a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 victory and then had a strong third set to complete the straight set match win with a 25-15 win.
Defense played a big role in the win as four Indians had double digit digs. Libero Angie Gonzalez (Walls) led the team with 16 digs, followed by Sarah Allyn Thornell (Atoka, Tenn.) with 11. Londyn Bakeris (Olive Branch) and Mary Leslie Cranford (Covington, Tenn.) added 10 each.
Cranford also had good night on offense leading the Indians with 10 kills.
Thornell had a team-high 23 assists followed by Lydia Hitchcock (Bristol, Tenn.) with 13.
The playoff win gave the Indians the season sweep of Northwest, but they will now turn their attention to No. 18 Pearl River. The Indians are set to face Pearl River Saturday at 4 p.m. in Poplarville with a trip to the NJCAA Gulf District Tournament on the line.
