Softball sweeps Holmes with 4-1 game two win

FULTON, MS – After a strong offensive performance in game one, the No. 12 Itawamba Community College softball squad had their bats cool off a little in game two, but a strong first inning propelled them to a 4-1 game two win and the series sweep of Holmes Community College on Wednesday.
Freshman Lane Kennedy (Smithville) gave the Indians (35-8, 20-6 MACJC) an early lead as she lead off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. Mamie Hollenhead (Mathiston) added to the lead a few batters later with a double that score Kaitlin Bradley (Columbus).
The Lady Bulldogs answered with a run in the second, but the Indians held a one run advantage.
In the fourth, the Indians picked up an insurance run on a run scoring single by Sheneria Tyes (Balwdyn) and Bradley plated a run in the fifth on a triple.
The two insurances runs made things easier for Carleigh Mills (Corinth) as she shut down the Lady Bulldogs to preserve the lead and pick up the 4-1 game two win and the sweep.
Mills held the Lady Bulldogs to two hits in her complete game outing and retired the final nine batters in order for improve to 14-2 this season.
The Indians will wrap up regular season play against Copiah-Lincoln Community College Saturday in Fulton. Both teams are have clinched playoff spots, but are fighting for the number three seed. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. with game two to follow at 4:00 p.m.
