FULTON, MS – After a week of no games, the Itawamba Community College Softball squad jumped back into competition and captured an 5-4 extra inning victory over Jackson State Community College(TN).
The Indians(10-2) knocked the dust off their bats early plating three runs over the fist two innings, but some defensive rust would allow the Lady Generals to tie the contest and force extra innings.
After an Addie Thompson (Hamilton) double in the opening frame and a run scoring sacrifice fly by Lane Kennedy (Smithville) in the second, the Indians held a 3-1 lead, but a fifth inning error allowed the Lady Generals (9-2) to tie the game at 3-3.
With neither team producing the go ahead run, the tight game headed to the eighth inning. The Lady Generals manufactured a run in the top of the inning, but a strike out combined with Mary Kansas Sullivan (Houston) gunning down the runner at second, ended the threat.
Sheneria Tyes (Baldwyn) opened the bottom of the eighth with a triple in the right field gap that scored Thompson, who was on second due to international tie breaker, to knot the game at 4-4. After an infield out, Maura Jane Autry (Holly Springs) landed down a bunt forcing a play at the plate, but Tyes was able to beat the tag and give the Indian the 5-4 victory.
Cassidy Hardy (Gordo, AL) picked up the win from the circle as she allowed two hits, one run and walked one in three innings of relief.
