It was a long Tuesday in Texas for freshman Cody Coins.
After rain delayed his opening match on Monday, Coins (Millington, TN) ran the gauntlet of playing three matches on the second day of the NJCAA DI Men's National Tennis Tournament in Plano, TX.
In his opening match in No. 4 singles, he defeated Todd Barajas of Temple College (TX) 6-3; 7-5 before falling to the overall No. 2 seed Jose De Sario of Laredo Community College (TX) 6-1; 6-2 in the championship bracket's Round of 18.
Between singles matches, Coins teamed up with David McElwain (West Point) in the opening round of the No. 2 doubles play and were defeated by Kaiser Cesar De Leon and Javier Declaire of Marion Military Institute (AL) 6-3; 6-4 to fall into the consolation bracket.
In No. 1 singles play Nathan Pinkney (Southaven) fell to overall No. 2 seed Tim Srkala of ASA College (NY) 6-0, 6-1 while No. Austin McElwain (Corinth) was also eliminated from tournament play after falling 6-4; 6-3 to the No. 8 overall seed Romar Hernandez of Marion MI (AL) in No. 2 singles play.
David McElwain was eliminated from the championship bracket after losing 6-4; 6-2 to Alex Brown of Seminole College (OK) in No. 3 singles play while No. 1 doubles duo of Pinkney and Austin McElwain fell into the consolation bracket after losing 4-6; 6-2; 6-4 to Harford Community College's (MD) Murilo Basso and Leonardo Sanches.
Drew Ballard (Tupelo) fell to Christian Jackson of Meridian CC (MS) 8-6 in the No. 6 singles consolation bracket.
Summer advances to consolation quarterfinals
Joseph Summers (Amory) defeated Robert Kiewit of Jones County Junior College (MS) 9-7 in the No. 5 singles consolation bracket.
He will face Yash Patel of College of DuPage (IL) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Summers will also team up with Caleb Ballard (Shannon) Wednesday afternoon against Vincennes College's (IN) Harsha Manjunath and Zach Mustin in the No. 3 doubles Round of 16.
