James "Booty" Sloan of Tupelo, two-sport athlete at Itawamba Community College from 1959-61, will be inducted into the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Sports Hall of Fame, Apr. 23, in Pearl.

The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Muse Center of Hinds Community College in Pearl.

Sloan played football at Shannon High School, where he started his coaching career in 1967. He was a two-sport athlete in football and baseball at then Itawamba Junior College from 1959-61. His honors included freshman class officer and friendliest.

Sloan spent 35 years in coaching and was athletics director at every stop beginning at Shannon. He became head coach at Tupelo High School in 1991, and his 1992 Golden Wave team, directed by quarterback Kirk Presley, won the Class 5-A state championship. He worked for a school supply company when he retired from coaching following the 1995-96 school year, but later served again as THS athletic director for three years and coach at Shannon, Saltillo and Nettleton.

His coaching career also includes West Point High School, W.P. Daniel High School in New Albany and Clinton High School as well as Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Sloan coached three MACJC All-Star football games and two Mississippi high school All-Star football games.

In 2004, Sloan was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame. He also served as the head coach of the inaugural Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game.

He and his wife, the former Wanda Nanney, have two children, Thomas F. Sloan, Tupelo pharmacist, and Jamie Sloan Taylor, assistant principal at Nettleton High School.
