Indians beat MS Delta for the first win of the season

Rashad Pargo caught two touchdown passes while Darren Daniel and DeShawn McGaughy each added a rushing touchdown as ICC defeated Mississippi Delta 30-0 on Saturday.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Indians (1-4, 1-1 MACJC North) got on the board early in the second quarter on a 7-yard run by McGaughy before sophomore quarterback Canden Dallas found Pargo for a 44-yard touchdown pass and again for a 13-yard scoring pass to put the Indians up 20-0 after a blocked extra point attempt.

Will Goodwin added a 27-yard field goal as the clock expired on the first half to give the Indians a 23-0 lead going into the break. Daniel tacked on the final touch of the game early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard dive into the end zone as the Indians cruised to their first shutout victory in five seasons.

"I'm proud for our players and the coaches because it has been hard to see all the good things they've done go without any reward," said ICC football coach Jon Williams. "This is a very tough league and while this win is a big one, it won't mean a lot tomorrow when we start getting ready for the next game."

Keon McGaughy had 93 yards rushing while Dallas was 18 of 38 for 214 yards a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions. Pargo finished with 83 yards on five receptions as the Indians rolled up a season-best 391 yards of total offense.

"This was the type of performance we knew this team was capable of," said Williams. "Hopefully this will be the shot of confidence we need to be able to have another strong push to finish the season."

Defensively the Indians also turned in a season-best performance holding Mississippi Delta (0-5, 0-2 MACJC North) to 73 yards of total offense while racking up 16 tackles for loss along with four sacks and forcing three turnovers.

"This might have been the best defensive effort by an Itawamba team since I've been here," said Williams, who has been on the ICC coaching start for five seasons.

The Indians' last shutout came in 2007 when they beat Coahoma 20-0.

ICC will hope for a repeat performance this weekend as they travel to Clarksdale to take on the Tigers in a North Division tussle.

"Coahoma is a very good football team," said Williams. "The coaches have done a good job getting that program on track and have made them a formidable force in the North. We'll have to put this win behind us in a hurry and get ready for another battle on Saturday."

Coahoma (0-5, 0-3 MACJC North) dropped a 56-6 decision to nationally-ranked East Mississippi on Thursday.

The radio broadcast will being at 1:40 p.m. on WAFM 95.7 FM and online at www.fm95radio.com.
