South defeats North 14-9 in MACJC All-Star game

Southwest MS Community College quarterback Vintavious Cooper completed 10-of-12 passes for 117 yards with one interception and rushed for 46 yards to earn MVP honors as the South snapped the North's two-game win streak with a 14-9 victory in the MACJC All-Star game on Saturday.

Ridge Rochelle (MS Delta) gave the North a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal, but the South answered with a 5-yard touchdown run by Melvin German (Pearl River) to take a 7-3 lead at the half. The South took a 14-3 lead on a 5-yard run by Larry Thompson (Pearl River) before Canden Dallas (ICC) marched the North down the field to make it a 14-9 game after a missed two-point conversion on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Deantae Smith (Northwest) with 5:39 left in the game.

The North defense forced a punt to get the ball back inside two-minutes left in the game, but the South forced the North to turn the ball over on downs to eventually run out the clock and hold on for the 14-9 victory.

Taylor Earhart (NECC), who was moved to the South All-Stars before the game, was 2-for-2 on extra point attempts.

Smith had three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown to earn North Offensive MVP honors while Ashton Ballard (ICC) picked off two passes to be named North Defensive MVP. Jaquaa Peters (Pearl River) caught two passes for 56 yards to earn the South Offensive MVP award while Brion James (Jones County) had eight tackles and two sacks to take home South Defensive MVP honors.

Justin Rogers (ICC) rushed for 24 yards on 2 carries while Michael Poole (NECC) had 8 yards on 2 attempts and one reception for 6 yards. Dallas completed four passes for 74 yards with one touchdown and an interception and rushed for 2 yards on 2 carries with Erik Buchanan (ICC) making one catch for 46 yards.
