CLINTON, MS – The Lady Indians' season came to an end after a hard-fought lost to No. 14 Jones County Junior College in the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament on Thursday.
Trailing 65-63 with 1:01 left in the game, Jones County (26-1) took care of business from the free throw line to escape with a 70-65 victory to face Hinds Community College (19-7) for the region championship on Friday.
But not without a large question mark looming over the game.
With the Lady Bobcats clinging to a four-point lead and the Lady Indians (17-8) gaining momentum, Jabria Pounds (Nettleton) stole the ball at midcourt and took two steps towards the basket for an uncontested lay-up before the whistled blew on a questionable foul call that allowed Jones to knock down a pair of free throws to take a five-point lead with 45.3 seconds left in the game.
Pounds finished the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds, her ninth double-double of the year and 12th of her collegiate career. Marlee Hatcher (Pontotoc) finished with 17 points and five assists while Aaliyaha Thornton (Hernando) added 11 and Zaida Cox (Ripley) finished with 10 points.
Nique Cherry scored 22 points to lead the Lady Bobcats.
