MOORHEAD, Miss – The Itawamba Community College Lady Indians wrapped up regular season play Tuesday afternoon with a 70-60 win over the Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans.
The MACJC North Division champion Lady Indians (20-3, 11-1) knew they would not be able to just cruise into the postseason since they had to face a tough Lady Trojans squad in the season finale. The Lady Indian defense held the Lady Trojans scoreless for close to five minutes at the start of the contest, but by the end of the first half, the game was knotted at 34.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half, but sophomore guard Jayla Chills (Ripley), who scored a game-high 23 points, led the charge for the Lady Indians to capture the lead and extend it to 10, 62-52, with just under four minutes remaining.
The Lady Trojans tried to mount a comeback leaning on sophomore forward Niya Head, who finished with 22 points and 21 rebounds, but the Lady Indians were able to weather the storm to pick up the 10-point victory and the program's fourth 20-plus win season in six years.
Jeronia Allen (Minden, LA) scored 14 points, and Alontra Tucker (Lamar) followed with 13.
With the regular season under their belts, the Lady Indians will shift gears to postseason play on Monday when they begin competing for the MACJC state title. The State Tournament is being held at Copiah-Lincoln Community College's Wesson campus. The Lady Indians will play their first game at 1 p.m. against the No. 4 seed out of the South Division that will be determined Thursday.
