FULTON, Miss – Coming off a 17-point road loss to Holmes, the Itawamba Community College Lady Indians rebounded strongly against rival Northeast. The Lady Indians beat the Lady Tigers in dominating fashion, 76-51, Monday night at the Davis Event Center.
The Lady Indians (18-3, 9-1 MACJC North Division) took the lead on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jayla Chills (Ripley) just over a minute into the contest, and they never looked back. Sophomore forward Lanikki McMillian (Pontotoc) took control after Chills' three, scoring 10 first half points to lead the Lady Indians to a 31-21 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Indians continued to dominate offensively, but their defense shined as well as they forced the Lady Tigers to shoot 29 percent from the field. It was a one-sided affair from Chills' three until the final buzzer as the Lady Indians cruised to the 25-point victory. The win is the tenth straight over Northeast, and it clinched the North Division title for Coach Nanci Gray and the Lady Indians for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
McMillian scored a team-high 15 points, followed by Jeronia Allen (Minden (LA) with 14, Kaelin Kneeland (Pontotoc) with 13 and Alontra Tucker (Lamar) with 11. Kneeland also grabbed 13 rebounds for her thirteenth double-double of the season.
Despite capturing the division title, the Lady Indians still have work to do in the regular season as they host East Mississippi Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the Lady Indians will recognize their sophomores following the game.
