Golf in 5th place after Day 1 of Region 23 Tournament

SAUCIER, MS - The ICC golf team, led by freshman Brandon Walker, finished the first day of the 2017 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament in fifth place on Monday at Grand Bear Golf Club.
The Indians combined for a 38-over 287, 27 strokes off the lead held by Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Walker (Vardaman) is tied for 7th at 5-over 77. He opened with a 1-over front with birdies on two and seven before closing the front side with back-to-back bogies. Walker pulled even with a birdie on 12, but went to the clubhouse with a 4-over back nine after double bogies on 13 and 15.
Kirk Reeder (Tupelo) finished the day tied for 21st with a 10-over 82. After birdieing the second hole, he closed the front nine with a double bogie on nine to make the turn at 6-over 42. Reeder had bogies on 11, 13, 14, and 17 to finish the back side at 4-over 40.
Nick Brown (Mooreville) ended the opening round tied for 24th at 11-over 83. After a pair of double bogies in the first four holes of the front nine, he rebounded to finish the final five holes at plus-one to make the turn at 6-over 42. Struggles on 12 set Brown back on the back nine, as he shot par on six of the final nine for a 5-over 41 on the back nine.
Todd Harrell (Vardaman) carded an opening round 12-over 84 to finish the day tied for 27th. Pair of double bogies on 7 and 8 knocked him an 8-over 44 on the front nine. Harrell finished strong with four-straight pars to close the back nine with a four-over 40.
Blue Mountain signee, Andrew McDonald (Fulton), ran into some trouble on the back nine to finish the day at 29th with a 14-over 86. He had a pair of birdies on five and nine, but a double bogie on 8 pushed his front nine score to 2-over 38. Triple bogies on 12 and 16 and double bogie on 13 haunted McDonald on the back nine for a 12-over 48 to close the day.
Northwest Mississippi Community College's Cameron Foster took the lead into the clubhouse with an even-par 72.
