CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The Itawamba Community College Indians snapped its six-game losing streak Thursday, getting 26 points for sophomore guard Lakee Westbrook (Shannon) to beat the Coahoma Tigers, 82-70.
Westbrook shot 77 percent from the floor to lead the scoring attack for the shorthanded Indians, who were without Howard Thomas (Brandon) and Barri Hill (Jasper, Ala.). Despite being two big men down, the Indians battled under the basket and outrebounded the Tigers with 43 boards.
Tyrone Wooten (Memphis, Tenn.) was questionable after battling an illness all week, but the Louisiana Lafayette signee, who entered the game with 13:31 left in the second half, finished with 17 points.
It was a tight matchup with 11 lead changes but after back-to-back 3-pointers by Wooten with just under 10 minutes remaining, the Indians (6-12, 2-5 MACJC North Division) took a 51-46 lead.
The Indians then extended their lead to as much as 16 points, and the Tigers (1-16, 0-7) began fouling out of desperation. In the final six minutes, the Tigers picked up 13 fouls including an intentional and a technical foul. The fouls slowed down the game, but not the Indians as they clinched their first victory of 2015.
Austin Timms (Mooreville) scored 13 points and picked up a team-high eight rebounds, followed by Dee Gates (Baldwyn) with 12.
January was unkind to the Indians, but they finished on a high note and look to start February with some momentum as they host Northwest Monday night. Tipoff at the Davis Event Center is scheduled for 8 p.m.
