FULTON, MS – Itawamba Community College sophomore point guard Alex Anderson signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his basketball career at the University of Tennessee-Martin on Thursday.
"It feels great," Anderson said about signing with UT-Martin. "A big part of me coming to ICC was to get back to the Division One level and it's even more special because I get to go back to the conference I came from with a bigger chip on my shoulder and a point to prove."
Anderson was named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) second-team All-American after averaging 16.7 points, 4.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game to help lead the Indians to their first Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Championship since 2008 and the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region XXIII tournament this past season.
"The coaches here at ICC are great people on and off the court," Anderson. "It's just a great place here at ICC with the crowds and the support from the community and the students makes it a great place for anybody to come and play basketball."
The Memphis, TN native was the top vote getter on the NJCAA Region XXIII team and was selected to the MACJC All-Star game.
"Alex has meant a whole lot to our program on and off the court," said Coach Grant Pate. "He's a winner, he's a competitor and a tremendous worker, but most importantly he's an outstanding young man. Transferring in from a Division One school the expectations were really high and he put a lot of pressure on himself, but he delivered all season long."
Heath Schroyer was named the program's new head coach in March after the Skyhawks finished 8-23 last season and 3-13 in Ohio Valley Conference play last season.
