CLARKSDALE, MS – Itawamba Community College suffered a heartbreaking 69-67 loss to Coahoma Community College in the final seconds of Monday night's North Division match up.
"This was a tough loss," said ICC head coach Grant Pate. "We fought hard, but Coahoma did a great job keeping us off the boards and limiting our second-shot opportunities, especially in the final few minutes of the game."
After a pair of misses by the Indians, Coahoma milked the clock for the eventual game-winning lay-up with less than three seconds left in the game.
"We had a let down on defense at the worse time possible," said Pate. "I thought we got lost in the paint and didn't communicate well to be able to help off the screen. Our youth and inexperience kind of showed up tonight up tonight."
Sophomore Quintin Lee (Ripley, TN) and freshman Johnthan McGee (Jackson) paced the Indians with a team-high 14 points.
"Q and Johnthan really stepped up tonight," said Pate. "Coahoma showed us a lot of different looks on defense and mix that with the wild atmosphere I think we let them get in our head from the start of the game and never really could get over it."
Deontaye Ewing (Tupelo) had 9 while fellow sophomore Tre' Wells (Tuscaloosa, AL) and freshman Ben Seales (Jackson) added 8 points each in the loss.
"We didn't get the production from the bench that it takes to be successful in this league," Pate commented. "I think we never really got our focus back from beating Northeast and that really hurt us tonight, not to take anything away from the great job Coahoma did in winning the game."
The Indians fell to 1-1 in North Division play with the loss.
