TANNER, Ala. – A three-run top of the third inning proved to be the deciding factor in the Indians' season-opening 5-2 win in Game 1 at Calhoun (Ala.) Community College on Tuesday.
Kyle Weaver (Courtland) doubled to start the third inning and the Indians (1-0) loaded the passes when Jackson Lancaster (Corinth) walked and Connor Lewis (Corinth) reached on a fielder's choice with no outs in the inning. Weaver scored on a wild pitch, before the Warhawks (3-3) struck out the next two batters, but Drew Thomas (Nesbit) came through with a single to left-center to score Lancaster and Lewis to give the Indians a 4-1 edge.
Calhoun got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Indians answered when Cason Milliorn (Olive Branch) walked to start the top of the sixth and scored on a sac fly to left by Hunter Nabors (Montevallo, Ala.).
The Warhawks loaded the bases and scored a run after a pair of Indian errors and a walk to start the bottom of the seventh before Sam Harrington (Mooreville) closed the door on Calhoun's rally with a ground ball to second for the final out of the game.
Kris Peet (Olive Branch) picked up his first win of the season after giving up an unearned run on 3 hits in four-plus innings of work. Harrington picked up his first save on the season after striking out one and walking another batter in one inning of work.
Kyle Crigger (Corinth) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. The Indians totaled 5 hits and committed 3 errors in the win.
