FULTON, Miss. – Game two of Saturday's doubleheader was a tight battle but a big sixth inning by the Ellsworth Community College Panthers prevented the Itawamba Community College Indians from getting the sweep as they fell, 8-6.
The Panthers got off to a hot start as the first batter of the game hit a solo homerun and led 4-0 after adding three runs in the top of the third. The Indians (5-1) answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning as a three run homerun by Timothy Rowe (Hernando) cut the deficit to one.
After the Panther picked up a run in the fourth, the Indians knotted it at five in the fifth when Tanner Poole (Amory) ripped an RBI triple and later scored on a passed ball.
The tie wouldn't last long as the Panthers plated three runs in the sixth on an error and two run scoring single. The Indians were able to push across a run in the final frame on a Poole double but a strikeout ended the ballgame. The 8-6 loss is the Indians first of the season.
Freshman pitcher Dylan Taylor (Fulton) was hit with the loss in his first start at Roy Cresap Field but is 1-1 on the season. Poole and Rowe accounted for five of the Indians six runs with a combined three hits and five RBIs.
The Indians will be on the road Thursday as they travel to Decatur, AL four a doubleheader with Calhoun Community College. First pitch is schedule for noon and game two to follow at 3 p.m.
