Lady Indians fall to Southwest Tennessee 7-5

Fulton, Miss. – After opening up the season on the road, the Lady Indians hosted Southwest Tennessee Community College for their home opener Wednesday. The Lady Indians jumped out to an early lead but fell 7-5 in the high scoring affair.

Freshman defender Josie Kate Reeves (Tupelo) opened the games scoring with a long range shot from approximately 40-yards out at the 13th minute.

Southwest netted the equalizer at the 35th minute and the game remained tied at 1-1 at halftime.

After the break, the goals came in quick and often. Southwest netted two goals at the 50th and 55th minute to take a 3-1 advantage, but freshman midfielder Emily Hayward (Oxford) beat the keeper to pull the Lady Indians (1-2) within one, 3-2 at the 62nd minute.

However, Southwest answered seconds later to extend their lead to 4-2, and netted another goal three minutes later to push the lead to three, 5-2.

Hayward found her second goal on the day at the 74th minute, but Southwest answered with a pair of goals over the ten minutes to extend their lead to 7-3.

The Lady Indians were down, but continued to press on as Brittany Mathis (Pontotoc) and Ashley Stevens (Amory) scored goals in the final six minutes of the contest. However, the deficit proved to be too much as they fell 7-5.

Friday, the Lady Indians will hit the road to face Holmes in the North Division opener in Ridgleand at 1 p.m.
