Summit, Miss. - The Lady Indians started their season against perineal powerhouse of ASA-Miami, but dropped a 5-0 decision. However, they rebounded quickly Sunday and picked up a thrilling double overtime victory over Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Despite the weather not being kind and interrupting the match numerous times, the Lady Indians took an early advantage as sophomore midfielder Ally Shinall (Oxford) beat the keeper at the 15th minute.
After a long delay due to lighting, Southwest scored two unanswered goals, but the Lady Indians tied the contest before halftime on an Emily Hayward (Oxford) goal.
Southwest regained the lead eight minutes into the second half, but Lexi Loden (Saltillo) tied the game with six minutes left in regulation by scoring on a corner opportunity.
Neither team could net the game winner in the final minutes of regulation or the 10 minutes of the first overtime, which sent the game to a decisive second overtime.
With only two minutes remaining, sophomore forward Sarah Whitt (Pontotoc) went top shelf to net the golden goal and give the Lady Indians the thrilling double overtime win.
The Lady Indians will begin division play Friday against Holmes Community College in Ridgeland at 1 p.m.
