SCOOBA, Miss. – The No. 10 Indians swept East Mississippi Wednesday, winning game one 9-4 and game two 21-10 to remain in a three way tie for first place in the conference.
Game 1: Indians 9, East Mississippi 4
The Indians (27-10-1, 17-3 MACJC) didn't waste any time as they opened the day with a three run first inning highlighted by an RBI single by Hope Harbin (Columbus) and a Mattie Meine (Olive Branch) double.
Harbin and Meine the hit back-to-back triples in the third and Meine scored on an error to extend the lead to 5-0.
East Mississippi answered with a three run fourth, but the Indians got one run back in the fifth as Makenzie Toombs (Ackerman) scored on a sacrifice bunt.
After a solo home run by East Mississippi in the bottom of the inning, the Indians put the game away scoring three runs in the sixth on a trio of run scoring singles by Summer Cryder (Tupelo), Macey Cox (Troy, Tenn.) and Kacey Carpenter (Grenada).
Olivia Burns (Grenada) picked up the win to improve to 15-4 this season and tie the program record for career wins at 34.
Game 2: Indians 21, East Mississippi 10 (6 innings)
The nightcap was a wild one as the Indians scored 12-runs in the fourth on their way to a 21-10 victory.
After jumping out to an early lead, the Indians trailed 8-4 after three innings, and then the fourth inning happened.
The Indians sent 17-batters to the plate with seven batters getting at least one hit and everyone reaching base once or more. Samantha Conley (Mandeville, La), Rachel Sternisha (Olive Branch) and Cox all doubled and Conley and Harbin picked up two this each in the frame.
When the dust settled, the Indians lead 16-8, but the game was far from over.
The Indians added a run in the fifth, but East Mississippi answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half to prevent the mercy rule. However, a four run sixth by the Indians gave them the run-rule victory and the sweep in the wild game.
Currently, the Indians are in a three way tie for first place in the MACJC with Jones and Mississippi Gulf Coast, but part of that tie could be broke up Saturday as Mississippi Gulf Coast visits Fulton for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
