Wayne Newsom of Fulton Newsom retired in 1998 after 23 seasons as head coach of the Indians basketball team.

After the Walnut native earned his B.S. degree from Southeastern Louisiana State University, he began his coaching career at Alcorn Central High School where he was head basketball and baseball coach until 1967. He moved to Aberdeen where as head coach of the basketball and baseball teams, he led the Bulldogs to two Little 10 championships.

As head coach of the Indians basketball team, Newsom was named Mississippi JUCO North All-Star Coach six times and finished his career with 687 wins and 359 losses.
