Indians #BeatNE in first-ever meeting

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – The volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Northeast in the first-ever meeting between the rivals Tuesday night.

Set One: Indians 25, Northeast 13

The Indians raced out to a 15-9 advantage and never looked back as they took the opening set by 12 points.

Set Two: Northeast 30, Indians 28

The Tigers forced the Indians to take a timeout when they jumped out to a 4-1 advantage. The Indians rallied behind back-to-back aces from Bree Lyons (Oxford) to pull ahead 10-7. The Tigers rallied and pulled ahead 20-18, but Aubrey Swanson's (Corinth) kill down the line tied the set at 24 all. The Indians took a 28-27 advantage, but the Tigers rallied out of a timeout with a 3-1 run to pull even on the night.

The two teams shared the lead 16 times in the set.

Set Three: Indians 25, Northeast 17

A block by Anna Grace White (Lexington, Ala.) made it a 10-7 score and helped swing momentum in favor of the Indians in the third set. The Indians went on a 4-1 run to take a 14-8 advantage before pulling away 20-12. The Tigers did not go away quietly as they rallied to make it a 23-16 set, but the Indians eventually put the match away for a 25-17 victory.

Set Four: Indians 25, Northeast 20

White kept the pressure on Northeast with back-to-back aces to give the Indians a 7-3 advantage in the fourth set. The Tigers rallied to make it 17-13 in favor of the Indians, but ICC answered with a 3-1 run to pull away before picking up the 25-20 win to secure the 3-1 victory.

Mia Griffin (Corinth) led the Indians with 11 kills while Swanson added 10 kills in the historic victory.

Audrey Hamill (Pontotoc) and White each finished the night with six aces. Hammill and Presley Jones (Killen, Ala.) added 19 assists each.

The Indians also had a season-high 10 blocks in the win. White had four blocks while Abbi Upchurch (Starkville) added three more.

ICC improved to 4-11 overall and 1-0 in Region 23 play. The Indians will be back in action against Paine College and Southern Union State Community College in the MUW Invitational on Saturday.
