Indians fall in region opener to Northwest, 3-2

Fulton, Miss. – In the region opener, the Itawamba Community College volleyball team fell to Northwest Mississippi Community College Friday, 3-2.

The Indians (10-3, 0-1) dropped the first set 25-19, but rallied to win the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-22.

Northwest forced a fifth set after winning the fourth, 25-16, and picked up to the 3-2 win with a 15-9 fifth set victory.

The Indians had a season-high 97 digs in the contest led by Olive Hines (Olive Branch) with 22 that ties her season-high. Sarah Allyn Thornell (Atoka, Tenn.) and Kailynn Johnson (Olive Branch) picked up 13 digs each, followed by Lydia Hitchcock (Boaz, Ala.) with 12 and Audrey Hamill (Pontotoc) with 10.

Hamill led the Indians with 18 assists, followed by Thornell with 16.

Thornell led the offensive charge with 18 kills and Vakeria Jett (New Albany) recorded a season-high seven total blocks.

The Indians hit the road for their next game when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. To face Lawson State Community College at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
