Lady Indians fall in season opener to No. 23 Meridian

FULTON, Miss. – Freshman Farrah Fowlkes (Amory) enjoyed a successful start to her collegiate tennis career after notching wins in doubles and singles action in the Lady Indians' 6-3 loss to No. 23 Meridian on Friday.

Fowlkes teamed up with Claire Ferguson (Mantee) to defeat Amber Wascomb and Sophia Calderon, 8-1, in No. 3 doubles before picking up an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Calderon in No. 6 singles play.

Doubles

The Lady Indians took an early 2-1 lead over the Lady Eagles after picking up a pair of doubles victories. Julianna Alves (Campinas, Saul Palo, Brazil) and Maggie Creekmore (New Albany) beat Zoe Freke and Elisiva Latu 8-6 in No. 1 doubles play to combine with Fowlkes' and Ferguson's No. 3 doubles win. Kaitlyn Meadows (Brandon) and Caroline Ferguson (Tupelo) dropped an 8-4 decision to Kennedy Rodriguez and Rachel VanHorn in No. 2 doubles.

Singles

After a marathon-like doubles match, Alvez dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4 (10-7) battle to Rodriguez in No. 1 singles action. Creekmore battled to an extra frame before falling to Latu, 5-7, 6-0 (10-3) in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Meadows fell to Freke 6-1, 6-1 before Caroline Ferguson dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to VanHorn. Claire Ferguson fell 6-4, 6-4 to Wascomb in No. 5 singles.

The Lady Indians will be back in action Saturday, February 9 when they host Holmes.
