Lady Indians finish fourth, Scott takes No. 4 singles titles

PERKINSTON, MS - The women's tennis team took fourth in the team standings at the 2016 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tennis Tournament on Saturday.
Madison Scott (Mooreville) earned her second-straight state and region championship by defeating top-seeded Hayden Hill of Meridian Community College 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles bracket. The sophomore was the No. 3 seed in the bracket and defeated Mary Neely Meyers of Hinds Community College 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seeded April Rudolph of Jones Country Junior College 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in the semifinals.
Jordan Roberts (Shannon) advanced to the quarterfinals of the No. 1 singles bracket after defeating Katie Burrall of Northwest Mississippi Community College 6-2, 6-1 before falling 6-2, 6-3 to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Paulina Estrada, who finished runner-up in the bracket.
Andria Barnes (Mooreville) advanced to the No. 2 singles championship match before dropping a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 decision to Madison Currie of Jones County. Barnes, the No. 3 seed in the bracket, knocked off Piper Johnson of Northwest 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Kerston Jumper of Northeast Mississippi Community College 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal round.
Kacey Byrd (Mooreville) dropped marathon match against former teammate Katey Gardner of Northeast 7-5, 1-6, 10-5 in the quarterfinals of the No. 3 singles bracket.
Ivy Robbins (Pontotoc) battled to a 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 10-7 victory over Anna Stevison of Gulf Coast before being defeated 6-2, 6-1 by eventual champion Jordyn Hull of Meridian in the semifinals of the No. 5 singles bracket.
Meredith Lee (Nettleton) defeated Hannah Payne of East Central Community College 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round of the No. 6 singles bracket before upsetting No. 2 seeded Abigail Smith of Gulf Coast 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinal round. The first-year player took No. 3 seeded Jones County's Breanna Waller to the limit before falling 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in the semifinals.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Roberts and Robbins defeated Chaney Mills and Brooke Payne of East Central 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round of the bracket before being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the bracket by No. 2 seeded Currie and Raquel Rodriguez of Jones County 6-0, 5-7, 10-3.
Scott and Byrd, the No. 2 seed of the No. 2 doubles bracket, defeated Andi McCrimon and Samantha McCrimon of East Central 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Waller and Claire Rounsaville of Jones County 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals.
Lee and Barnes took the opening set, 6-0, against Smith and Kendra Soley of Gulf Coast before an injury with the ICC duo leading 2-0 in the second set push the pair of sophomores in the quarterfinals of the No. 3 doubles bracket. Eventual bracket runner-up Rudolph and Mattie Mills of Jones County eliminated the pair with a 6-2, 6-4 loss in the quarterfinals.
ICC finished fourth with 16 total points. Meridian won the state and region title with 27 points and Jones County finishing second one point behind the Eagles.
