Byrd advances, Lady Indians slip in tournament standings

TUCSON, AZ – After finishing the first day of the tournament in ninth place, the Lady Indians slipped to 15th with a total of 12 points while ASA College in New York, State College of Florida, and Tyler Junior College in Texas all remained at the top of the standings with 27 points each.
Once again, Kacey Byrd (Mooreville) started the day off on a strong note for the No. 18 Lady Indians as she battled through a hard-fought three set match against Grace Golden of Seward County Community College (KS) to advance to the Great Eight of the No. 6 singles championship bracket with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory.
Ivy Robbins (Pontotoc) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to two-seeded Sarah Peek of State College of Florida, who is a heavy favorite to take home the individual national title in the No. 3 singles bracket.
Andria Barnes (Mooreville) and Anna Claire Griffin (Iuka) closed out singles play with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
Barnes defeated Michelle Fournier of Mesa Community College (AZ) 8-4 in No. 2 play while Griffin upset seventh-seeded Claudia Maka of Moraine Valley Community College (IL) in dominate fashion by winning 8-2 in No. 4 action.
ICC faced two of the nation's top duos in No. 1 and No. 2 play doubles action.
The No. 1 tandem of Taylor Patterson (Munford, TN) and Aliesha Hudson (Yazoo) fell to sixth-seeded Miranda Rodriguez and Jaycie Talbot of Seminole State (OK) 6-0, 6-2 while Robbins and Griffin fell to fifth-seeded Kamiliah Thomas and Efrosina Kariqi of Florida State College at Jacksonville 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 play.
The duo of Barnes and Madison Scott (Mooreville) battled to the bitter end before losing 3-7 in a tiebreaker to Natalie Hernandez and Lina Restrepo of Broward College (FL) in No. 3 doubles action.
The Lady Indians will look to make a surge down the stretch with five players still in action heading into the third day of tournament play.
