Hunt leads Lady Indians in NJCAA National Tournament

TUCSON, AZ – Sophomore Anna-Blair Hunt (Senatobia) help lead the Itawamba Community College's charge through the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Tennis National Championship at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona.
On Sunday, Hunt drop her opening round match 6-1; 6-2 to Anri Ueno (St. Petersburg College) to move into the consolation bracket where she defeated Jenna Bechtold (Lewis & Clark Community College) 8-2 in Wednesday's quarterfinals round.
On Thursday, she defeated Kirby Shannon (Seminole State College) 8-1 in the morning session before falling 8-1 to Katy Adams (Meridian Community College) in the afternoon session.
In other NJCAA Women's Tennis National Championship action, No. 1 singles competitor Amy Evans (Ravenshoe, Queensland) defeated Sonora Ijdo (Harford Community College) 7-5; 6-0 before being eliminated from tournament play by overall top seed Fausthyara Pietersz (Tyler Junior Colege) 6-0; 6-0 on Monday.
Katherine Downing (Pontotoc) dropped her opening round No. 2 singles match 6-0; 6-0 to Maja Sasa (East Arizona College) to move into consolation bracket play where she advanced to the semifinals after defeating Kathryn Randolph (Lewis & Clark Community College) 8-3 and Britney Sibley (Jacksonville College) 8-2 in Tuesday's quarterfinals before being eliminated from championship contention 8-0 by Mallory Davis (Meridian Community College) in Wednesday's semifinals.
In No. 4 singles action, Bianca Stephens (Hernando) fell 6-4; 6-1 to Aspen McCann (Barton Community College) in Sunday's opening round and advanced to the consolation bracket quarterfinals before being eliminated from tournament play after an 8-4 loss to Laurica Nelson (Georgia Perimeter College).
Theresa Jackson (Clarksdale) dropped Sunday's No. 5 singles opening round match 6-0; 6-0 to Ashley Pedro (Eastern Arizona College) before being eliminated in the second round of the consolation bracket 8-4 by Jaime Christiansen (Barton Community College).
No. 6 singles Amber Frederick (Shannon) defeated Josie Masinelli (Lewis & Clark Community College) 6-1; 6-4 before being eliminated by overall top seed Kerry Wiegand (Tyler Junior College) 6-0; 6-0 in Monday's Round of 16.
Evans and Downing teamed up to defeat Karina Ono and Michelle Miller (Barton Community College) 6-4; 7-5 in the opening round on the No. 1 doubles championship bracket. The duo was eliminated from tournament play 6-2; 6-3 by overall third-seed Amanda Gilson and Clorinda Wessel (Collin College).
In No. 2 doubles action Hunt and Jackson fell to Sierra Pizarro and Jocelyn Martinez (Temple College) 6-2; 6-3 on Sunday and advanced to the consolation bracket quarterfinals before being eliminated from tournament play 8-0 by Kayla White and Loni Karras (Eastern Arizona College) on Tuesday.
Stephens and Frankie Turner (Pontotoc) advanced to the championship bracket semifinals after getting by Christiansen and Gentry McLeland (Barton Community College) 6-4; 6-4 and fourth-seeded Shaunte Southern and Brianna Holzerland (St. Petersburg College) before being eliminated from championship contention after a 7-6(2); 6-2 loss to Tara-Beth Hall and Molly Davis (Meridian Community College).
The Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Champion Lady Indians finished the national tournament with 11.5 points and tied with Barton Community College for 15th, best finish by any MACJC school participating in this year's tournament.
