PERKINSTON, MS – The nationally-ranked Lady Indians rebounded from their season-opening loss to sweep Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 9-0 on Saturday.
"The girls came out with a lot of focus and determination compared to yesterday," said ICC head tennis coach Paul Johnson. "They had a refuse-to-lose attitude and really did a good job of feeding off each other's momentum throughout the day."
The No. 20 Lady Indians (1-1) got things going when No. 1 doubles duo Amy Evans (Ravenshoe, Queensland) and Katherine Downing (Pontotoc) defeated Britney Buker and Kit Chowdhary8-2 with No. 2 Anna-Blair Hunt (Senatobia) and Theresa Jackson (Clarksdale) took care ofMary King and Aliesha Barlow 8-4 before Frankie Turner (Pontotoc) and Amber Frederick(Shannon) were able to hang on to defeate Sarah Sores and Megan Fontenell 9-7 in No. 3 doubles action.
"It was important for us to get something going early," Johnson commented. "I felt like if they could play solid in their double matches it would be able to carry over to their single matches."
Such was the case as the Lady Indians moved to a 9-0 victory with a sweep of singles play.
Evans picked up the No. 1 win after Buker had to forfeit her singles match. No. 2 Downing defeated Chowdhary 6-2; 6-1 with Hunt picked up 6-3; 6-4 wins over King in the No. 3 match-up. No. 4 Stephens took care of Sores 6-3; 6-0 while Jackson defeated Fortenelle 6-0; 6-3 in No. 5 play.
"You kind of had that feeling that the girls were going to get it done today," Johnson said. "They were happy with how they played on Friday and wanted to get things going when they came out today."
Frederick battled through a tiebreaker to defeat Barlow 6-3; 5-7 (10-6) to help the Lady Indians complete with sweep in the No. 6 singles match.
"I was proud of Amber and her being able to fight to win her match today," said Johnson. "It's very easy for a freshman to crack under the pressure of that situation, but she kept battling and picked up a big win for her to be able to build as the season continues."
The Lady Indians will return to the courts during Spring Break as they travel to Gadsden State Community College and Georgia Perimeter College.
